Through Made to Order Equestrian, Mary puts her wealth of knowledge and experience to work for you through quality instruction and training services designed to meet your equestrian needs and goals. Mary Berlauk specializes in developing a proper foundation and groundwork competencies in all the horses she works with, in starting horses under-saddle, and in creating an amateur friendly equine partner. As an instructor she teaches each student toward their personal equestrian goals and clearly explains the reasoning behind the Riding Equitation and the horse training methods she uses. Mary Berlauk is especially capable in instructing the nervous or timid rider and/or horse gain confidence, conquer fears, and reach their goals. Also, her strong background in training Show Hunters and Equitation mounts makes Mary Berlauk and Made to Order Equestrian a great choice for training show prospects or sale horses and their riders.
In September 2012, Mary Berlauk relocated to North Carolina with her husband Dustin and their three dogs and two personal horses. Mary Berlauk brought her successful equestrian business with her in Made to Order Equestrian, offering North Carolina her signature, "Made to Order" approach to equestrian instruction, horse training, show coaching, and other equestrian services.
From the Fall of 2009 through August 2012 Mary Berlauk and Made to Order Equestrian served Crawfordville and the Tallahassee area of Florida. There, Made to Order Equestrian offered Training, Lessons, Boarding, Coaching, Sales, Showing, an After School Equestrian Program, Equestrian Internships, Summer Camps, and Equine Recovery Board. In the Summer/Fall of 2010 Mary Berlauk trained and competed a Wild Mustang gelding, Simon Says in the Tennessee Extreme Mustang Makeover, a National Horse Trainer's challenge. Though Simon did not place well at the contest, he returned to Made to Order Equestrian as one of our favorite lesson horses. Mary Berlauk's signature style of creating ride-able and trusting equine partners turned a frightened and unpredictable Wild Mustang into a trail and lesson mount in only 100 days!
In April 2009 Mary Berlauk competed in the Gatorland Extreme Mustang Makeover. For this national challenge, trainers were selected and assigned a wild American Mustang then given approximately 70 days to train the horse in groundwork, trail course work, and a list of riding competencies. The Top Ten competitors then had four minutes to perform a "Freestyle" ride to music. Mary and her Black Mustang mare, "Tiramisu" were Reserve Champions with their thrilling, jumping routine set to Reba McEntire's "Fancy." Their performance earned Mary an invite to compete at "Mustang Magic," an elite, invitation only, annual event!
Throughout her riding career, Mary Berlauk has earned ribbons competing in rated and local shows, showing in classes such as the First and Second Year Green Hunters, Medals, Junior and Adult Hunters, various Equitation divisions, Hunter and Jumper Derbies, as well as Training and First Level Dressage, jumpers, and even one Beginner Novice event! She dedicated several months to studying wild horse behavior, herd dynamics, and Natural Horsemanship in Northern California on a wild horse sanctuary. Mary Berlauk also won ribbons as an equitation rider with the Virginia Tech IHSA Hunt-Seat Team.
Mary Berlauk has trained horses and riders across Florida and North Carolina. She has served in a management and teaching role at riding schools and private riding facilities. Mary Berlauk has extensive experience re-training Thoroughbred racehorses into competitive Hunters, training "problem" horses, tuning up ponies and horses for show, and preparing and marketing sale horses. She has also served in a volunteer capacity with the Orange County Sheriff's Office Mounted Patrol Unit by assisting with the care, selection, and training of their horses. Growing up, Mary rarely rode a "lesson" pony; she rode whatever was in the barn that others either could not or did not want to ride, (usually because the pony or horse had a reputation for naughty behavior!) As such, she learned to ride and to train a horse simultaneously, which fostered in her a natural ability and love for training horses and teaching riders.
Over the years Mary Berlauk has treated and rehabilitated many horses and ponies. Her experience includes the care and management of the following equine conditions: laminitis, hoof abscesses and other hoof ailments; bone fractures; tendon and ligament damage; EPM and other neurological problems; soft tissue injuries, wounds, and various skin conditions; splints; post-operative care; colic; auto-immune diseases; infections; illnesses; eye injuries; and other maladies.
Outside of the horse industry, Mary Berlauk has held positions at LA Weightloss, the Florida Department of Health, and Virginia Tech. She incorporates her experience in counseling, health education, curricula development, strategic planning, teaching, and group facilitation into her riding instruction and training programs. In addition to her professional experience, Mary Berlauk also gained a broad knowledge base through her coursework at Virginia Tech where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2004 with a degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics and a minor in Animal and Poultry Sciences.
